Food and Wine as Medicine is a thought-provoking, one-day event exploring how what we eat and drink has long been understood and utilized as medicine. Grounded in the ongoing research of the Yale Ancient Pharmacology Program (YAPP), this event uses the program’s pioneering archaeological science to uncover and engage with ancient medical and natural histories.
Keynote speaker Andrew Koh will share how cutting-edge residue analysis is revealing the food, wine, and plants once used across the ancient world to heal the body and occasionally transform the mind. Florida State University professor and classicist Trevor Luke will trace these natural technologies through texts from Hippocrates to Pliny and Galen, demonstrating how plant knowledge and therapeutic practices can be united throughout history to reframe and recast familiar narratives. New York Times bestselling author Brian Muraresku will examine how interdisciplinary approaches like Koh’s could allow us to experience firsthand these lost or forgotten innovations to connect with the past, preserve our health, and enrich our lives.
Together, the speakers invite the audience to rethink modern wellness through the lens of a shared history where food and wine have always been central tools for cultivating a good and healthy life.
