Wine From Koln Germany Region

I would like to bring a hostess gift to a former resident of Koln (Cologne) Germany. I thought a regional favorite might be a welcome gift. Would you suggest a nice option that is available to purchase through wine stores?
Answer From Expert Roger Bohmrich MW

Cologne is situated along the Rhein River, and, while not exactly adjoining, the nearest wine districts would be the Mittelrhein, the Ahr, and - a little further - the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. This is good news for you as it makes it easy to find a wine in any good US wine store. I suggest it may be easiest to locate a fine Mosel Riesling bearing the name of one of the many villages, notably Bernkastel, Piesport, Urzig, Zeltingen, or Trittenheim.
