Please join us Wednesday, February 28th, any time between 4:30-7:30pm, when we welcome Matthew Sharp to our wine bar. Matthew is the Director of Sales for Shafer Vineyards and will present a flight of their amazing red wines including two very special releases of their coveted 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select vintages from 2010 and 2013.
John Shafer has accomplished many great things in his lifetime, beginning with his daring missions as a B-24 bomber pilot during WWII, his time working as an engineer and his successful career as a publishing executive in Chicago. However, his greatest achievement could be considered founding his world-class wine estate, Shafer Vineyards. Without any practical knowledge of how to grow or make wine, John decided to leave his corporate job and head out to California with his family in 1972 where he purchased a 209-acre property in Napa Valley. The land had originally been planted to vines in the 1880s and again during Prohibition, yet he knew the vineyard needed to be rejuvenated. Thus, he learned yet another vocation and became a grape grower, replanting the original 30 acres and installing new plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon on the hillsides. By 1978, John Shafer, the winemaker, came to be when he made his first Cabernet Sauvignon from those hillside vines which he released in 1981 to great critical acclaim at the Napa Valley Wine Auction. In 1983, John asked his son, Doug to take over as winemaker and hired Elias Fernandez as assistant winemaker so he could focus on expanding the business.
Doug’s smart intuition to convince his father that the fruit from those hillside vineyards should be isolated to create a singular wine gave birth to the very first Hillside Select vintage of 1983. The Hillside Select bottling would go on to become not just Shafer’s most famous wine but the seminal wine of the Stags Leap District which became an official AVA thanks to John’s efforts to have the area properly recognized as a unique growing region. With John moving into the role of Chairman in 1994, Doug became President and Elias was named winemaker, who has carried the Shafer torch into the 21st century, deftly upholding the estate’s reputation as one of Napa Valley’s premier producers.
