Please join us for a special Thursday Beer Flight on February 15th anytime between 4:30-7:30pm when we celebrate Beer Week and welcome back Laughing Monk Brewing who will be pouring a flight of their delicious brews. Sales Representative, Amelia Franklin will be on hand as our guide.
As is the case with many young folks, Andrew Casteel’s passion for beer blossomed during college when he was a student at Caltech. It was there that he “repeatedly, unsuccessfully tried to sample every one of the 40 beers at Lucky Baldwin’s before they changed their tap list”. Undeterred, Andrew started experimenting with home brewing, became a beer judge through the BJCP, or Beer Judging Certification Program, and eventually a Cicerone, a Certified Beer Professional. All that beer knowledge and an inspiring trip to Belgium to experience “the breadth of styles and the depth of craft in their beers” encouraged Andrew to start a brewing company in his new home of San Francisco. Enamored with Belgian beer culture, he named his small batch brewery “Laughing Monk”, where the staff refer to each other as ‘brother’ and ‘sister’ and engage in local community service events just like the beer brewing monks of Belgium. Andrew hired another avid fan of that country’s brewing traditions, Jeff Moakler, as the Brewmaster, who crafts Belgian style ales with a mix of local, seasonal California ingredients.
The Laughing Monk Tap Room is located in the city’s Bayview district with an open air bar from which thirsty patrons can view murals that were painted by local artists during a day-long concert last year. The event was hosted by Andrew who co-founded Imprint.City, the non-profit organization whose mission is “to develop arts and culture programs to encourage economic development in underserved communities.” In the tradition of Monastic brewers who brewed to fund their good deeds in the cities they worked in, Laughing Monk Brewing not only subsidizes Imprint.City but also supports and even occasionally sources from five different community gardens in the neighborhood. The beers themselves are quite delicious and taste even better knowing they help fund invaluable local programs that enrich the community. Cheers to good beer and good deeds!
