Taste the 254: Special Edition Kenyan Coffee Tasting Experience with Dr. Erika Koss
For this edition of Taste the 254, we’re partnering with Dr. Erika Koss, a Nairobi-based Q instructor and SCA Authorized Coffee Trainer. She is a writer, researcher, and teacher who co-created the original SCA Coffee Sustainability curriculum. She earned her Ph.D. from Saint Mary’s University in Canada. Her doctoral research focused on Kenya’s coffee history and ongoing gendered gaps. Read more about Dr. Koss in the Speaker Bio section.
Over two hours, you will:
1. Build a sensory foundation
In this hands-on session, you will practice building a sensory foundation through aroma and flavor exercises that sharpen your ability to differentiate fruit notes and basic tastes in coffee.
2. Explore differences in Kenyan coffees
For the tasting, we will feature a flight of coffees representing different regions, including a selection brought to you straight from Kenya. Explore who grows it, how it's processed and the impact of those processing decisions, both economically and sensorially.
3. Put Kenyan coffees in context.
Learn about Kenyan farms, cooperative structures, climate pressures, and gender gaps that shape Kenya’s coffee economy.
Limited to 16 participants.
