Sonoe Hirabayashi comes from a long line of fermenters. She grew up in Nagano, Japan, in a family that made sake, soy sauce, and miso and grew apples. Her winery's name goes back even further: Six Cloves honors her ancestors, medicine sellers on the Japan Sea coast who were known by a six-clove crest and later moved inland to make soy sauce and miso. Sonoe carries that tradition forward, just in a different medium.

Wine was a second career. She was working in New York for a Japanese import-export company when she fell for wine, and she briefly weighed becoming a CPA. She realized she'd rather make something than spend her days at a computer, so she enrolled in the winemaking program at UC Davis and worked harvests in Napa, Sonoma, New Zealand's Martinborough, and Chile. She was an enologist at DRNK and Sebastiani before founding Six Cloves in 2017.

Today she makes small lots in Sonoma County with fruit from family-owned organic and regenerative growers. Her Chardonnay comes from the Linda Vista Vineyard in Napa, farmed by Steve Matthiasson, just down the road from the vineyard behind Chateau Montelena's famous Judgment of Paris win. Her Magnolia is a Cabernet-Merlot blend from the cool Sonoma side of Carneros. Her wines are precise, pure, and made with Japanese food in mind, and they're wonderful at the table.

Sonoe will be here to pour them herself.
