Spain has only two wine regions in its top tier, the DOCa (or DOQ in Catalan): Rioja and Priorat. They couldn't be more different, and tasting them side by side is one of the best lessons in Spanish wine you can get.

Rioja is Spain's classic. Its reputation was built in the late 1800s, when merchants set up bodegas around the railway station in Haro to ship wine north to France. CVNE, founded there in 1879, is one of those original houses and still one of the benchmarks. Its wines range from Monopole, one of Spain's oldest white wine brands, to Imperial, the Reserva that has defined traditional Rioja for about a century. Contino, CVNE's estate in Rioja Alavesa, was the region's first single-vineyard winery, a château-style idea in a region long built on blending.

Priorat is the rebel. It's a small, rugged corner of Catalonia with vines clinging to terraces of crumbling black slate called llicorella. The region was nearly abandoned until the late 1980s, when a handful of pioneers arrived and began making powerful, mineral-driven reds from old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena. Josep Lluís Pérez of Mas Martinet was one of them, and Clos Martinet is the wine that helped put modern Priorat on the map.

Carmen Ramos Pérez of Eat Drink Spain will pour the current releases.

Line-up:

CVNE, Monopole Blanco — Viura, crisp and bright

Contino, Blanco — the estate's white from Rioja Alavesa

CVNE, Crianza — classic, easygoing Rioja

CVNE, Imperial Reserva — the house's flagship since the 1920s

Mas Martinet, Clos Martinet — old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena from Priorat's llicorella
