Some stories begin long before the first vine is planted. The Snowden ranch traces its roots to 1878, when homesteader Levi Philander Davis cleared sixty acres on the eastern slopes of Napa Valley. By 1955, Wayne and Virginia Snowden had purchased this storied land, carrying water up the hillside in garbage cans tied into the back of a 52 Oldsmobile just to keep their first Cabernet vines alive.

Their sons, Scott and Randy Snowden, took stewardship of the ranch in 1981. Randy has been the voice of the estate ever since, a Napa Valley native who spent his school summers in the cellars of Heitz Wine Cellars and Robert Mondavi Winery before dedicating himself to the family land. As managing director, Randy has guided Snowden’s evolution from a celebrated grape source, whose fruit once graced the wines of Silver Oak, Caymus and Frank Family, to an estate winery whose single-vineyard bottlings stand among Napa’s most authentic and compelling.

For this tasting, Randy will be with us in person, pouring the wines and guiding guests through the collection.

Today, four generations of Snowdens tend just 23 of their 160 acres, allowing the surrounding woodlands, mountain lions and bald eagles to flourish alongside wines of remarkable character. Winemaking is led by Randy’s niece, Diana Snowden Seysses, a Napa native who divides her time between the family ranch and her role at Domaine Dujac in Burgundy, bringing a distinctly European sensibility to these rugged hillside vineyards. The result: classically styled, terroir-driven wines of uncommon elegance and singular identity.
