Italy is mostly hills and mountains, a peninsula of nooks and crannies with an astonishing range of native grapes and soils. For nearly twenty years, PortoVino has been working the back roads to find the growers who make the most of it. They buy only from families who farm their own vines, never from bottlers buying grapes. Their tastes run savory rather than showy: wines with moderate alcohol, the tension that limestone brings, and the spice of volcanic soils. Their portfolio leans on mountain and island wines, from the Alps and Apennines to Sicily and Sardinia.

It's a portfolio that covers the classics and the corners alike: Barolo and Chianti alongside Alto Piemonte and Alta Tuscia, Emidio Pepe's legendary Abruzzo wines alongside Walter Massa's revival of Timorasso, and Etna reds from I Custodi alongside everyday bottles from their FUSO project with small organic growers. In the words of founder Ernest Ifkovitz, it's a time for tempi belli, good times to love Italian wine.
