Plein Air Painting Competition At Links Bridge Vineyards

On July 25 Links Bridge Vineyards is holding a plein air painting competition in and around the vineyard. There will be a dozen or more artists competing – all of whom are experienced plein air painters from the Frederick area. Visitors to the winery on that day will be able to stroll around the vineyard and observe the work in progress. Painting will begin at 11 am and will be completed by 3 pm. Completed paintings will be on display for the rest of the afternoon and visitors will be able to vote for their favorite paintings. Three prizes will be awarded: Popular Choice of the visitors, Collectors Choice, awarded by a panel of three art collectors, and the Artists’ Choice, awarded by the participating artists themselves. 

Plein air artists are so called because they work outside in “plain air” and their goal is to capture a special moment of lighting and shadows in the scene that evoke a feeling for them. Of course, the natural lighting does not hold still so the plein air artist has to seize the moment and work quickly to capture the light as they see it. Plein air is a bit like doing speed dating with nature. The result can be so spontaneous that deceptively simple, fast strokes can capture the essence of the scene.  

The public is encouraged to come, watch the artists and even purchase their favorite painting. It will be a visually rich day and that will pair well with a glass of cold white wine.
