Wednesday, October 28 · 5–7pm · The Wine Bar at Flatiron SF
It started with a bus stop. Jenny Lefcourt was in Paris working on a Harvard Ph.D. in French film when a wine shop owner next to her stop invited her in and poured her a cloudy Loire Chenin Blanc unlike anything she'd tasted. The next weekend she went back for a tasting and met Hervé Souhaut, a young winemaker in the Rhône. A month later she and her then-husband, François Ecot, a Burgundy-trained winemaker, turned up at his cellar. Hervé opened his wines, then his friends' wines, and then his wife invited them to stay for dinner. "That was the beginning of everything," Jenny says.
In 2000, they started Jenny & François Selections as a side project, bringing a few natural wines from France to a handful of New York restaurants and shops. Few Americans had heard the term then. Within a few years Jenny had left academia behind, and today J&F is one of the most influential natural wine importers in the country. Its growers are mostly small, farming organically, fermenting with native yeasts, and adding little or nothing. Most are in France, with a growing number in Italy and Spain.
Ully Povoa will pour a selection of the portfolio's newest arrivals.
