The history of wine in Napa Valley dates back to the mid-19th century, when early settlers recognized the region’s ideal climate and soils for grape growing.

By the late 1800s, Napa Valley had gained a reputation for quality wines, but progress was halted by two major setbacks: the spread of phylloxera (a vine-killing pest) and Prohibition in the United States, which forced most wineries to close. Only a handful survived by producing sacramental wine or other legal products.

The modern era began in the 1960s and 1970s, led by pioneers like Robert Mondavi, who championed quality winemaking and helped elevate Napa’s global reputation. The defining moment came in 1976 with the Judgment of Paris, where Napa wines famously outperformed top French wines in a blind tasting—shocking the wine world and putting Napa firmly on the map.

Since then, Napa Valley has become one of the premier wine regions globally, known especially for Cabernet Sauvignon, while also producing world-class Chardonnay, Merlot, and more.
