Cantina della Volta makes the kind of Lambrusco that Michelin-starred restaurants put on their wine lists and pour by the glass. They include Lambrusco in the traditional red, innovative rosé, and in a white form so meticulously made that they only get to use about half the juice in each grape. Oh, and a sparkler from Chardonnay that puts the bow on Wine Spectator’s assessment that these are “Lambrusco al la Champagne.”
The Bellei family founded their winery in Emilia Romagna’s Sorbara region in 1920, when producers were already well on their way to abandoning traditional Lambrusco practice of making the second fermentation in bottle and turning to the “Charmat” method of stainless steel tanks.
Through four generations, Christian and his family have rejected this kind of change while implementing their own. They have always farmed sustainably and are now working organically. Their fruit is picked by people, not machines, and pressed slow and low to pull out only the best juice, even though that means making less wine from each acre of vine. They essentially invented rosé and white Lambrusco to show everything the Lambrusco di Sorbara grape can do. And created some of the most compelling sparkling wines not only of Italy, but in all the world.
