Wine production in Australia dates back to 1788, but radical changes in the 1970s have made the world’s largest island also one of the hottest exporters of wine, in more ways than one. Journey down under to the limestone coast, where the red clay of Coonawarra produces inky Cabernet Sauvignon rivaled only by those of the far west Margaret River. In South Australia, Riesling abounds, and Syrah gets a new name (and personality). Zesty Hunter Valley Semillon and the sweet, wood-aged wines of Rutherglen, called “stickies,” are as unique as Aussie slang. Bogans and bludgers are invited–we’re all mates here.
