This class is part of the Grandes Pagos de España Certification Program. You may enroll in this module as a standalone class, or complete it as part of the full certification program to earn the Grandes Pagos de España Certificate.
The class features a thorough coverage of the Mediterranean and Central Spain Regions, along with some of the best wines Spain has to offer during the tasting.
These sessions explore two complementary areas of Spain, highlighting how climate and classification shape wine style. Along the Mediterranean coast, warmer and drier conditions lead to ripe, full-flavored wines that differ markedly from those of Spain’s Atlantic-influenced regions.
In the Mediterranean zone, you will study Monastrell (known internationally as Mourvèdre and in Australia as Mataro), experiencing its power, firm structure, and warmth-driven character. The session also introduces the native varieties Bobal and Merseguera, illustrating how local grapes respond to heat and drought while maintaining balance and freshness.
Meseta Central is where Spain’s Vinos de Pago classification was first established and remains home to several of its most influential examples, though the classification now exists in other parts of Spain as well. In this session, you will be introduced to four Vinos de Pago producers based in Meseta Central and taste their wines, gaining insight into how estate-specific appellations express terroir beyond traditional DO boundaries.
