This class is part of the Grandes Pagos de España Certification Program. You may enroll in this module as a standalone class, or complete it as part of the full certification program to earn the Grandes Pagos de España Certificate.

The class features a thorough coverage of Southern Spain and Spanish Islands, along with some of the best wines Spain has to offer during the tasting.

Southern Spain & The Islands

This session examines southern Spain beyond its traditional association with fortified wines, focusing on the region’s growing importance for high-quality still red and white wines.

You will study diverse expressions of Pedro Ximénez, including its use in dry and still styles from the excellent Montilla-Moriles producer, Alvear, and taste the rare Tintilla de Rota. The session also explores how international grape varieties perform in southern Spain, with examples from Grandes Pagos de España producers, including Palacio Quemado and its use of primarily Portuguese varieties.

For fortified wines, you will taste single-vineyard Sherries from Valdespino, highlighting site expression and traditional ageing practices in Jerez.

The class also includes wines from Mallorca, with a focus on the native variety Mantonegro, illustrating the influence of island climates and local varieties on wine style.
