Q: What is a fortified wine?
A: Wine to which a distilled spirit, typically brandy, has been added to increase the alcohol content to a higher level, usually between 15-22% ABV. This fortification process was originally used to preserve wine for long sea voyages, but now yields a diverse range of sweet and dry wines with richer flavors and longer shelf lives. Common examples include Port, Sherry, and Madeira.
