1-Gianni Gagliardo 2020 Barolo Classico Piedmont Italy
$59.99 bottle and by the six pack $53.00 bottle
Barolo Gianni Gagliardo is the result of the blend of eight parcels located in five municipalities. In principle, each vineyard is vinified separately, to then be blended with the others at the end of the vinification. Only occasionally, that is when the perfect maturation of several parcels occurs at the same time, can one opt for an assembly of grapes. It is therefore a traditional approach. An orchestra where each vineyard expresses part of its character to create an elegant, complex work but, in this case, of particular readiness. Historically the La Morra grapes have always been prevalent in this blend, but never alone. The various municipalities complement each other, revealing the specific identities of this Great Territory.
2-Gianni Gagliardo 2020 Barolo La Morra Piedmont Italy
$84.99 bottle and by the six pack $70.00 bottle
Lesser knows Barolo appellation, the ‘’Comunale’’ can be produced by multiple parcels within the same village. So by its 11 villages, the Barolo area can produce 11 Barolo Comunali. Poderi Gianni Gagliardo makes two of them. The La Morra since vintage 2016 and Monforte since 2020, that will be release for the first time this year. Barolo del Comune di La Morra is made by a specific zone of La Morra. It’s the area surrounding the cellar, with a lower altitude compared to the village average. It’s a place historically recognized by local winemaker to source flavors, ethereal notes, and early expressing wines.
3-Gianni Gagliardo 2020 Barolo Castelletto Piedmont Italy
$159.99 bottle and by the three pack $140.00 bottle
This plot is a magical place. Here there is one of the greatest biodiversity in the Barolo area, and it is easy to come across birds of prey, wild boar and roe deer. It is in fact located at the entrance to a narrow valley where a beautiful natural forest resides. This position, together with its orientation to the East, make it a vineyard with a particularly cool microclimate, with strong temperature variations in the hot season. In this vineyard, even in summer the soil tends to remain wet for longer, and after the rains it is always quite complicated to return to the vineyard. For this reason, choosing the harvest date is very important: in autumn after the rains, it is possible that the vineyard will remain impractical even for a week. It’s a vineyard with a particular balance that always produces very small bunches, and the thinning operations are particularly delicate. In 2020, the budding occurred very regularly and homogeneously, but much earlier than the average of recent years. We had arrived from a mild winter and a very warm start to spring. The rainy spring created sufficient water reserves for the entire year. Being a particularly cool plot, coped very well with the heat peaks of August. The result was a great balance in the vineyard and perfectly healthy grapes, harvested at best ripeness.
4-Gianni Gagliardo 2020 Barolo Fossati Piedmont Italy
$159.99 bottle and by the three pack $140.00 bottle
Fossati is the smallest plot we grow. It is a vineyard that always gives great results. It is a little sensitive to downy mildew but easily manageable with our biological defense. In 2013 we decided to replace the clone over grafting the wood from the mass selection of the Lazzarito vineyard. It is a vineyard with a slightly late cycle, it buds late and is generally harvested last but always with excellent results. Fossati just has to be waited for, here more than in other vineyards the courage to wait in picking plays a very important role. The 2020 vintage had been marked by a great vegetative balance in Fossati. Early budding as in the other crus but about a week after the others. The rains of May and June kept us busy in the biological fight but, thanks to the promptness of the interventions we maintained an excellent defense. The early summer rains led to bunches that tended to be bigger than in previous years, and the thinning operations were fundamental to rebalancing production to make the most of the Fossati microclimate.
5-Gianni Gagliardo 2020 Barolo Lazzarito Piedmont Italy
$174.99 bottle and by the three pack $160.00 bottle
Vineyard exuberant for energy, positioned in a microclimate where everything is enhanced and highlighted. It is among the first to sprout and among the last to be harvested. It is a soil that must be ventilated and worked with delicacy, the response to green manure of brassicas and legumes is always excellent, practice to be carried out carefully and not throughout the vineyard because it tends to be a little vigorous despite the limestone. The mass selection of our Gagliardo clone was born from this vineyard. In early years, Lazzarito is the vineyard with the most presence of vine cutworms, which we also controlled well in 2020 with manual night catch. The very rainy months of May and June were very positive for the vineyard. Thanks to its unique exposure, excellent ventilation is always guaranteed during the afternoon, a peculiarity that has maintained excellent plant health. Lazzarito in the 2020 vintage had particularly thick skins which guaranteed good health of the grapes until harvest.
6-Gianni Gagliardo 2020 Barolo Monvigliero Piedmont Italy
$174.99 bottle and by the three pack $160.00 bottle
Vineyard acquired in 2014. A bit like Lazzarito, Monvigliero too has a very long vegetative cycle. In some years it germinates 10-15 days earlier than the average of the other vineyards. The health of the Monvigliero vineyard is always impeccable. It is a vineyard that must be protected from excessive sun.Monvigliero was the first vineyard to sprout, as often happens. Unlike ’19, in 2020 the budding was very beautiful, quick and regular. During the winter we installed anti-hail nets in order to shade the bunches and some of the leaves. This allowed us to avoid stress due to heat and drought. Monvigliero was the first Barolo vineyard to be harvested in 2020, with grapes ripened to perfection a full 12 days before those located in Serralunga and Monforte.
