Few importers have done more to bring the wines of Central and Eastern Europe to American glasses than Eric Danch. He and his partner Catherine Granger founded Danch & Granger Selections in 2019 as the successor to Blue Danube Wine Company, the pioneering importer that first opened up the region to U.S. drinkers. Eric spent eight years at Blue Danube, turning the Bay Area into its biggest market and traveling the region to meet its growers. When the founders retired, he and Catherine carried the work forward.
Their portfolio centers on Hungary and its neighbors: Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovakia, and Romania. They favor organic farming, native grapes, and a light touch in the cellar. That means grapes like Furmint, Kékfrankos, Plavac Mali, and Žilavka, from places with centuries of winemaking history that spent much of the 20th century behind the Iron Curtain. Eric calls it the "New Old World," and there's hardly a better value in wine right now.
He's also one of the best storytellers in the business, and a Bay Area favorite. If you joined us for his Blaufränkisch tasting, you know. If you didn't, come find out.
