Local author Rebecca Rosenberg will give a presentation of her award-winning new historical novel, Champagne Widows, on Thursday, April 21st. There will be a 5:30 reception, followed by a 6:00 reading. Featuring the First Woman of Champagne, Veuve Clicquot, this effervescent historical novel features the life of Barbe-Nicole, who defies the Napoleonic code to launch her own champagne business. Having inherited Le Nez (an uncanny sense of smell) from her great-grandfather, a renowned champagne maker, the young woman marries her childhood sweetheart, François Clicquot, despite his mental illness. After his tragic death, now-Veuve (widow) Clicquot must grapple with a domineering business partner, the complexities of making champagne, and six Napoleonic wars, which cripple her ability to sell champagne. In the ultimate showdown, Veuve Clicquot defies Napoleon himself, risking prison and even death.
