Local Event
Centered around Abi’s vibrant and “remixed” approach to Filipino American desserts, this event pairs thoughtful conversation with a mayumu (and local, baby!) tasting component featuring signature ube cookies from JP Makes and Bakes.
Abi Balingit is a baker and author based in Brooklyn. Her debut cookbook, Mayumu: Filipino American Desserts Remixed, won the 2024 James Beard Emerging Voice Award in Books. When she’s not working full-time at a live music company, she is running a baking blog called The Dusky Kitchen.
The conversation will be moderated by Detroit's very own, Jonathan Peregrino, a veteran of season 7 of the Holiday Baking Championship on the Food Network and the owner and genius behind JP Makes and Bakes.
Together, Abi and Jonathan will discuss memory, heritage, baking as identity, and the growing visibility of Filipino flavors in American food culture within Vesper Books and Wine, the only culinary bookstore and wine bar in the United States.
Guests will also enjoy the finest treat tasting from JP Makes and Bakes included with admission.
After the conversation, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, mingle, and get books signed.
Ticket IncludesPerfect for bakers, cookbook lovers, dessert enthusiasts, and anyone curious about the evolving world of Filipino American food culture.
