Winemaker Charla Bosman & owner David Trafford run the pioneering Sijnn winery - at the end of a long and bumpy dirt road 40km from Swellendam on the Cape South Coast (230km east of Cape Town). Nestled near the small town of Malgas, on the banks of the Breede river, it is the only winery in Malgas area. The name Sijnn (pronounced Seine) is derived from the Khoisan word, meaning 'riverbank'.
30 year old Charla Bosman runs the wine estate with a small team, living on the farm with her husband, baby, a few dogs and chickens. She has been resident winemaker here since 2015, having worked at Kanonkop and Tokara in South Africa as well as in California and Portugal. Owner David Trafford is a pioneer - architect by trade who fell in love with wine and is owner/winemaker at De Trafford in Stellenbosch. He discovered the Malgas site in 2000, when he stumbled upon this piece of land which was for sale - it was an old ostrich and wheat farm. The soils reminded him of Chateauneuf du Pape and Douro in Portugal. These are extreme vineyards and incredible soils.
The first 10 hectares of vines were planted in 2003 and first wine made in 2007 - and they now have 25 hectares under bush vines. Wines are made with minimal intervention. The wines are imported by Raeburn Fine Wines.
