Wines Made from Hybrid Grapes by Marty Cook
We are all familiar with the short list of so called “Noble Grapes” that includes such favorite European or Vitis vinifera grape varieties as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Riesling. But, what about grape varieties with names such as Seyval Blanc, Chambourcin, Norton, Traminette, Vidal Blanc, and Vignoles? This latter
group is comprised of Hybrid grape varieties. But, what is a “Hybrid”?
According to Wikipedia, “Hybrid grapes are grape varieties that are the product of a crossing of two or more Vitis species. This is in contrast to crossings between grape varieties of the same species.” So, a Hybrid is the crossing of two species of grapes, such as Vitis vinifera and, say, Vitis labrusca or Vitis aestivalis. A quick check on Google renders any number of possibilities for Hybrid wine grape varieties. A good source of such wines (if not your wine cellar) would be virtually any winery east of the Rockies.
