Take it outside with a wilderness survival workshop! 2020 was an unprecedented year with so many of us stuck inside and isolated from the world around us. In 2021, things are finally looking brighter! With the renewing feeling of spring, come to Hunt Country and enjoy the outdoors and some of the pleasures we enjoyed before these pandemic times. Before the hustle and bustle of summer, take full advantage of getting outside with Wilderness Survival Instructor, Lindsay Cray. Learn about the four tenets of nature: fire, water, shelter, and food. Enjoy a rejuvinating spring day immersed in the woodlands at Hunt Country with other thoughtful folks interested in learning about our relationship with nature and how to find the gifts it has to offer.

Instructor:

Lindsay Cray is a wilderness survival instructor, a NYS Hiking and Camping Guide, and certified Wilderness First Responder. She is also the CEO of Trybe (Tribe) Ecotherapy where she focuses her career on the development and delivery of progressive and intentional outdoor programs that help people broaden their personal growth, enhance interpersonal relationships, and foster appreciation of the natural environment.

Lucky for us, when she is not working with her team of staff at Trybe, she provides freelance classes in wilderness immersion to the public as well as teaches courses through the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and RIT.  Her goal is to make simple but long-lasting, positive impacts on those she works with.

Workshop:

This class covers the basic survival sequence: shelter, fire, water, food including concepts of how to keep out of the elements, where to look for nourishment and finding your way home. We will use time honored techniques and materials collected from the natural world to create warmth, purify water and maybe sample some wild edibles. Learn ancient friction fire methods used by humans for tens of thousands of years. This class will teach you the basic knowledge of carving and fire building necessary to make a fire with you bare hands. Methods taught in the class will include Bow-drill and 2-person drill.

Expect a few challenges to up the excitement factor because this class will take place entirely outdoors. We'll be sure to rekindle that wild spirit!

Program & Food:

9am: A quick "meet & greet" with coffee, tea, and a homemade breakfast nibble in our Tasting Room. Please arrive a little early so we can get started right at 9am.

12pm Lunchtime: Bring your own packed lunch. Refridgeration or coolers will be provided.

4pm Happy Hour: An "end of day" glass of wine and light snacks will be included to celebrate a productive day of fun learning, and new friends.

* Please let us know ahead of time if you have any dietary restrictions.

What to Bring & What to Wear:

Masks are required when inside buildings and at any time when appropriate social distancing is not possible. You must bring a mask.

You will be trekking through the woods, so bug spray, rugged clothing, or comfortable boots, sneakers, and closed toes shoes with good traction are highly recommended. Remember to bring lunch, a water bottle, and any personal snacks you'd like to bring are fine to have on hand as well. We will have tools and supplies so it is not necessary to bring your own.

Layering will be especially important to keep you warm/cool, dry, and comfortable. As you know, "there is no bad weather, just bad clothing". As this workshop will be focused on survival skills, adventure, and connection in the outdoors, the goal is to be challenged, get dirty and learn with freedom to explore. As such, we ask that you make sure you check the weather leading up to and on the day of class so you are dressed appropriately for seasonal weather and environment while outside.

Rain Date:

We will also be paying close attention to the weather forecast. Excesive rain and dangerous winds will be our only reasons to turn to the Rain Date of Sunday, May 23rd. We will make that determintation on Friday evening, May 22nd and will contact you with any changes in schedule.

Covid-19 Update: We're taking all the necessary precautions to host events and workshops in a safe, healthy, compliant and fun way. Over the next few months, as each event on our calendar approaches, we'll be carefully assessing whether or not the circumstances at the time allow us to meet the standards for hosting safe and fun gatherings. If we feel the need to cancel an event, ticket holders will be notified of the cancellation and all ticket fees will be fully refunded.
