Wine-making is nothing new to the Basques. Like many parts of Spain, vineyards in the Basque Country have been tended since the Iberian Peninsula was part of the Roman Empire. This autonomous region sits on the extreme western end of Spain's border with France in the north where the western Pyrenees Mountains lie and has hundreds of miles of coastline on the Bay of Biscay. Basque natives are fiercely independent, and many of its wines reflect this spirit. The light, semi-sparkling fresh whites like Txakolina are great companions to all the fresh seafood being consumed here since time immemorial. Farther south in Navarra, and the Basque province of Alava where the Rioja Alavesa lies, we find heartier, wood-aged whites and legendary reds. Let’s explore this unique, fascinating region!
