Because of both its stunning capacity to age (better than most reds!) and its ability to maintain poignant varietal identity while reflecting the singularity of its terroir, Riesling may be the best of all the white wine grapes. Its homeland is Germany, where it has been cultivated since the 1400s or earlier, and where it is made into wines which vary from bone dry to the complex sweet wines made from botrytis-affected berries, individually late-picked. Riesling is a darling grape of sommeliers as its wines are arguably the most versatile at the table. However, it suffers from a misguided reputation for being “too sweet.” Let’s explore the diversity of this most noble varietal, from its homeland in Germany, to Alsace and Austria, to examples from the USA, Australia and New Zealand. Hopefully, you will leave fully surprised!
