While studying agroecology and sustainable agriculture at UC Santa Cruz, Ross became increasingly involved in cultivating the sustainably farmed, extremely cool-climate Coastlands Vineyard planted by his father, David Cobb, in 1989. Situated on a Sonoma Coast ridge top just four miles east of the Pacific Ocean, the Coastlands Vineyard remained Ross’s ongoing passion while he simultaneously advanced his career at an impressive list of places. At Ferrari-Carano in Dry Creek Valley, he established a soils lab and winery research team after which he became the enologist and lab manager for Randall Graham at Bonny Doon Vineyard in Santa Cruz (all the while making his own non-commercial, small-lot Pinot Noirs from his family's vineyard). He then joined William Seylem, where he worked alongside Bert Williams and Bob Cabral, who had been using fruit from the Coastlands Vineyard. In 2000, Ross joined Flowers Vineyard & Winery as the assistant winemaker and was promoted to full time winemaker in 2004. Meanwhile, his parents founded Cobb Wines in 2001 with the intention of Ross crafting small quantities of elegant Pinot Noir from their excellent estate fruit. Cobb Wines has evolved to include four other vineyard designate Sonoma Coast Pinot Noirs from other like-minded growers. Soon after, Ross could no longer fulfill his commitment to Flowers because Cobb Wines and his other consulting projects keep him too busy.
This will be a great opportunity to meet the very sweet and humble Ross and enjoy his extremely well-made, highly allocated, elegant wines.
