Adam Tolmach has been making wine in his idyllic hometown of Ojai, California, just inland from Santa Barbara, for over 30 years. After graduating with a degree in Enology and Viticulture from UC Davis in 1976, Adam’s first wine job was at Zaca Mesa in Santa Barbara where he met Jim Clendenen. The two of them decided to go out on their own and started Au Bon Climat in 1982, riding an instant wave of success for almost a decade. In the end, they both realized they were headed in different stylistic directions and Jim became the sole owner of Au Bon Climat in 1991. Adam on the other hand had been making a little Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc from a small backyard vineyard he planted in Ojai since 1983 so after he and Jim split, Adam proceeded to make wine under the Ojai Vineyard label.

Despite the Ojai Vineyard name, Adam doesn't own any vines; but rather has long-term contracts for a parcel or an acre here or there, so he can control the farming to his exacting standards on some of the best vineyards on the Central Coast. In his evolution to becoming one of the best winemakers in California, Adam has used less new oak; he has also been picking his fruit much earlier than in the past—to show the bright flavors and acidity that naturally come from his meticulously farmed fruit—since the 2008 vintage. As a result, the Ojai Vineyard wines have never been better and continue to gain loyal fans with every new release.
