Some wineries are well known, some are not. Sometimes you plan to visit a winery and other times you stumble upon a rare gem with little or no prior planning whatsoever. Peter and I discovered Solar Fortun last summer even though they were not well known and we had not originally planned to visit them. But, as fate would have it, we were able to “fit in” a visit with Santiago (pictured above) at the winery’s production facility in Ensenada at the end of our exploratory trip to the Valle de Guadalupe, a new (for us) and exciting wine region. As we left the winery to drive back to the US, we both agreed- what luck and what a find! Solar Fortun Winery is 15 years old, owned by Santiago’s family and run by he and his brother- a culmination of a lifetime of family effort and love for wine. Having 10 years winemaking under his belt (and his viticulture degree from UC Davis), the wines Santiago produces are unique, well-made and have set a very high bar to be met by the other wineries in the Valle. Tonight, we bring the Valle to you: Santiago will join us to share his expertise and passion as we enjoy four of his outstanding wines including a lovely Petite Verdot to finish the evening. Orto’s culinary team has creatively paired each wine with a gourmet food course designed to bring out the best in the wine (and the food). We will be dining al fresco (outside, under the stars) in Orto’s lovely piazza so dress warmly. Come, join us and discover this rare gem for yourself!
