What we adore about Bordeaux blends, both Merlot and Cabernet based, is the unmistakable profile of black and red berry fruit – currant, raspberry, plum – against seductive cedar tones, firm tannins and mouth-filling flavor. But: can we tell really the difference between the Old World and the New? Does the Left Banks’s seductive smooth texture and dusty forest floor aromatics born of St. Emilion and Pomerol’s unique clay-gravel-limestone soils translate to a recognizable French stamp? Does California’s North Coast, flooded with sunshine, produce reds that are simpler, more straightforward, and more open in their youth as conventional wisdom would have us believe? Let’s find out together! We show 10 Merlot-based wines, most of them served “blind”, not telling you what they are, and you’ll deduce, or cheerfully guess!
