DIVING DEEPER: GAJA

There are few wineries in this world whose names alone carry the weight of giants. Producers who have molded history and clawed their way into mythology; producers whose wines elicit a sense of adventure and conquest in those who have experienced them; producers who have truly become those of legend. Names like Château Margaux, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Château d’Yquem, and Champagne Krug come to mind. If these are the titans of the wine world, then we must have gods. And one of those gods? Gaja. Quite possibly the most important producer in the history of Italian winemaking. You’ve heard of Barolo and Barbaresco, I’m sure. Well, the man who put them on the map? Angelo Gaja: a god in the winemaking world. A man who single handedly created the “single vineyard” wines in Italy. A man who elevated Italian wines to the world’s stage. A man who created a legacy of greatness in Italian wines. Before Gaja, there wasn’t a bar in which we could judge quality. After Gaja? Well, the bar was set, and to this day? You’re lucky if you get to taste a wine that can stand up to the legend that is Gaja.

We’re extremely excited to announce that we will be featuring a table full of Gaja wines at our Deep Dive Italy event. It’s rare that we get to share our golden geese with everyone, so it’s such a pleasure to be able to announce this. Elation doesn’t even begin to describe how we feel.

DIVING DEEPER: A WAR IN THE HEAVENS AND GRAPES GROWN FROM THE TEARS OF GOD

It is said that Dante and his angel uprising took place over Mt. Vesuvius. God, so pained by watching his angels in brutal battle, shed tears which fell upon the great volcano below. Where the fertile tears landed, grape vines grew. To this day these vines grow on the foothills of Mt. Vesuvius and, to honor their mythical origins, are known as Lacryma Christi Del Vesuvio or The Tears of God / Christ. We are honored to have one of the great producers of Campania’s historic wines, Mastroberardino, offering Lacryma Christi Del Vesuvio Rosso. Alongside these unbelievably unique wines, Aglianico (also known as “the Barolo of the south”) will be represented from its famous home region of Taurasi. Alongside Mastroberardino, Nativ, a small winery run by two sisters, will be attending and showcasing Aglianico from the lowlands of Campania all the way to the foothills of Dormant Volcanoes. These two wineries are exceptional and showcase grapes rarely seen on store shelves. Please try and make a stop at these two wineries during your visit!

Angelo Gaja: Champion of Italian Wine

Gaja will be the Wine Spectator's featured winery the same month as our Italian Deep Dive! You'll have to purchase the magazine next month for the full article but it begins, "When Angelo Gaja made his first trip to the U.S., in 1974, there was little market for fine Italian wines. He traveled tirelessly, promoting his belief that wines from Barbaresco, the broader Piedmont and across Italy could be world-class. Gaja sat down for an exclusive interview with Wine Spectator editor and publisher Marvin R. Shanken to reflect on the past 50 years and look to the future.

Plus, tasting reports on Piedmont, Bordeaux's 2021 vintage, and California Sauvignon Blanc, including tips for sustainable wine drinking and more"

Deep Dive Italy may be our best wine tasting yet and always sells out. Grab your tickets sooner than later!

From Medusa to Mt. Etna

Medusa wasn't all bad. She was one of 3 Beautiful Gorgon (snakes instead of hair) sisters. Medusa stood out for her particular ability to turn men to stone at her very gaze but the goddess was also known for her help to fight the forces of evil. The Sicilian Flag bares her image in front of the Trinacria, three legs symbolizing the major promontories of Sicily.

In attendance at Deep Dive Italy will be some of Sicily's most unique, historic and sought after wineries including: Azienda Agricola COS, Tanuta Rapitalà, I Custodi delle vigne dell'Etna, and Murgo Winery
