Hutch Bar & Kitchen to Host a “Dine Around for Justice” Benefit Event
Hutch Bar & Kitchen in Oakland will host on Thursday, August 2 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. a “Dine Around for Justice” benefit event in support of pro bono legal services for low income people provided by the Alameda County Bar Association. The restaurant will donate 15% of the evening’s food and beverage revenue to support this service.
Since opening in 2013, Hutch, named after King's grandfather, has been acclaimed by customers and critics alike for its Southern Regional American cuisine. The East Bay Express noted the "generous portions" of food, served in a space "that has been renovated beautifully." Comments King, "I've been gratified by the community's great response to our opening and the willingness of our customers to try dishes that they may not necessarily be familiar with."
A native of Memphis, Tennessee, King began his 20-year culinary career in Montana and Memphis, with stops in Thailand and Copenhagen, subsequently settled in the Bay Area and helped launch Southpaw BBQ in San Francisco in 2011, before opening Hutch where he has combined traditional family recipes with a Californian sensibility with respect to ingredients. When not in the kitchen, he enjoys spending time with his family, watching horror movies, listening to heavy metal music, playing the bass guitar and waxing poetic on religion and philosophy.
A hallmark of the restaurant's full bar beverage program, curated by King, is a selection of more than 100 American whiskeys, with flights that cater to all levels of drinkers, from beginner to advanced. The California-focused wine and beer lists round out the bar program. Every Tuesday is “Industry Night,” where specially priced cocktails and snacks are offered to those who work at bars and restaurants in the surrounding area.
Decor highlights of the 38-seat dining room designed by McGriff Architects include an egg shell and charcoal grey color scheme, a high redwood paneled ceiling (circa 1930s) with skylights, locally crafted custom-made majestic metal chandeliers, 80-year old walnut veneer table tops, reclaimed wood accents, dramatic bridge-themed multi-panel oversized photographs (the Hernando de Soto Bridge in Memphis and the original Bay Bridge), tall front windows ensuring lots of natural light, a community table made of old growth pine, and a partial exhibition kitchen. The zinc-topped bar has seating for 11 and there are two setback sidewalk tables in front of the restaurant.
Hutch Bar & Kitchen is located at 2022 Telegraph Avenue, between 20th and 21st Streets, in Oakland, California. The kitchen is open Tuesday through Saturday from 5:00 to 9:30 p.m. and the bar starts pouring at 5:00 p.m. and continues until late. Reservations are available online via the restaurant's website and that address is www.hutchoakland.com. The telephone number is (510) 419-0622.
