Silver Oak, now one of the most widely recognized producers of Cabernet Sauvignon in the world, had a humble beginning.
Raymond Duncan was hooked on Napa Valley when he first visited the area in the 1960s. Convinced of its bright future as a world class wine region, he bought land in Napa and Alexander Valleys with the intention of planting vineyards. However, his business and life were in Colorado, and he needed to partner with someone locally. Enter Justin Meyer, who was working for Christian Brothers at the time. They met through mutual friends and Justin agreed to plant and manage Ray’s vineyard land. Justin also wanted to build a stand-alone winery “that would forever raise the standards of California wine.” Thus, began Silver Oak Cellars in 1972.
One of the keys to their success was their focus on only one varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon, and crafting the best possible wine every year from the grape for which, now decades later, Napa Valley is renowned. Their mission was to make a new style of Cabernet Sauvignon, “rich and complex, deliciously drinkable from the day it was released, yet worthy of cellaring for years to come.” They were able to achieve this drinkability thanks to their extensive ageing program of 25 months in American oak and an additional 15-20 months in bottle.
Silver Oak recently purchased a “newly renowned” winery, Ovid, an organically farmed, 15-acre vineyard on top of Pritchard Hill. In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, Ovid also blends with Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Fermenting only with native yeasts and high elevation fruit, these wines are expressive and experimental.
Adding to the mix is Twomey, which was founded in 1999 by the Duncan Family to create delicious wines from varieties other than Cabernet Sauvignon. Their Sauvignon Blanc is made from their four estate owned vineyards in Napa Valley and Russian River Valley. With a passion for Pinot, they now make seven different single vineyard wines, and on this occasion, we are featuring one of the Anderson Valley Pinot made from Bearman Bend Vineyard, Monument Tree Vineyard and Ferrington Vineyard.
