Please join us on Thursday, October 7th, as Chef Jacques welcomes Alexandra Calla from importer Dreyfus Ashby to host a “Burgundy Meets Oregon” dinner with the wines of Maison Joseph Drouhin of Burgundy and Domaine Drouhin Oregon. Joseph Drouhin founded his company in Burgundy in 1880. In the 1970s, his son Robert, then head of the company, was introduced to Oregon wines and organized a comparative tasting in Burgundy. By 1986 Robert’s daughter Véronique, now winemaker at both properties, was starting a series of internships at at Bethel Heights, The Eyrie Vineyards and Adelsheim. Shortly after that, Drouhin acquired the vineyard site in the Dundee Hills that became Domaine Drouhin Oregon.
Véronique Drouhin is quick to point out both similarities and differences between her native Burgundy and Oregon. ‘It’s a cool climate – that is the reason we went to Oregon,’ she says. ‘But the volcanic soil is so different.’ Drouhin’s next project called Roserock, is located in Eola-Amity Hills AVA, just to the east of a break in the Coast Range known as the Van Duzer Corridor. The soils here are more varied, including limestone as well as volcanic Jory soils, and the winds flowing through the corridor keep the vines even cooler.
The vineyards, managed by Véronique’s brother Philippe, are all certified as sustainably farmed. They, with their siblings Laurent and Fréderic, run the family-owned company.
As Véronique puts it: ‘There aren’t many places on earth where Pinot Noir grows well. Oregon is absolutely one of the few where the delicate grape variety expresses itself in such a refined way.’ We look forward to having you join us and see for yourself how the Drouhin Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from Oregon compare with those from Burgundy.
