The Australian Wine Society of Toronto is having its own celebration of Australia Day 2022, on Friday Jan 28fellow AWS members and guests via ZOOM Virtual Meeting, to enjoy an Australian themed dining event, prepared by our new catering partner - ACQUA. Food and wine will be delivered on the day of the event.

The evening's fare will be complimented by a curated selection of Australian wines presented by our cellar master, Joe Gentile. The meal and wine will be delivered to your home(RESTRICTED TO GTA), where you complete the minimal preparation and plating, get comfortable and join us on ZOOM. Virtual "dining" rooms will be available for those of you who want to have a more private and quieter virtual dinner with your regular tablemates.

The evening will begin with a virtual reception on ZOOM, main room opening @ 7:00 p.m.. After some opening greetings, Joe Gentile will give a summary of the wines offered. At this point you can join your friends in your private virtual room.

Cost will be $100 (meal & 1 bottle of wine) or $70 (meal only) for AWS members, $115 (meal & 1 bottle of wine) or $85 (meal only) for non-member guests. All taxes and fees are included. Additional bottles of wine can be ordered for $30 per bottle.

Wines available for selection include (based on availability when your order is received):

Lindemans Bin 30 Pink Sparkling (South East Australia)

  • Light bodied, with raspberry and red fruit flavours, finishes crisp, dry, and citrusy. Ideal as an aperitif or with light first courses and hors-d’oeuvres.

Gapsted Tobacco Road Pinot Grigio 2016 (Victoria)

  • Light bodied wine with classic Pinot Grigio characteristics. Dry, clean and refreshing with a crisp lemony finish. Popular as an aperitif, by acting as a palate cleanser and refresher, it will complement the Aquavit Cured Salmon Gravlax. These traits, make it a good match for either the Coq Au Vin Blanc and the Mixed Bean Cassoulet.

Dandelion Honeypot of the Barossa Rousanne 2017 (Barossa)

  • Medium bodied with ripe pear and honeysuckle in the mid palate leading to a crisp, dry lemony finish. Nice pleasant sipper that would also pair well with the Aquavit Cured Salmon Gravlax and either the Coq Au Vin Blanc or/and the Mixed Bean Cassoulet but unlike the Pinot Grigio, the added richness of fruit and depth of flavour makes for a more concentrated and amped up mix.

Rockcliffe Third Reef Pinot Noir 2017 (Great Southern)

  • Medium to full bodied with spice and plum on the nose, soft ripe red fruit mid palate with a silky dry finish. This all purpose wine, can be used to match any and all of the food on offer but would probably work best with the mid weight Coq Au Vin Blanc and the Mixed Bean Cassoulet due to its balanced flavours, acidity and body.

Gapstead Hidden Story Merlot 2014 (Victoria)

  • Medium to full bodied with blackberry and raspberry fruit in mid palate; soft , ripe, generous with balanced tannins, leading to a lightly spiced finish. Much like the Rockcliffe Pinot Noir above, this wine would pair with all mains listed but with a more concentrated and bold flavour. A notch richer and fuller.

Pertaringa Undercover Shiraz 2015 (McLaren Vale)

  • Full bodied with bold black fruit , mocha ,vanilla, spice and pepper in the middle, finishing with a balanced , lightly tannic, dry finish. The biggest wine on the list is a classic match for the Shiraz Braised Australian Lamb Shank. Need I say more...

Your three course dinner will include:

First Course (choice of one)

  • Aquavit cured Salmon Gravlax, baby rocket, pickled mustard seed, local honey mustard
  • Truffled Celery root soup, with caramelized pear, chestnut cream

Main Course (choice of one)

  • Shiraz braised Australian lamb shank, served with pomme aligot, winter greens, leek hay
  • Coq au Vin Blanc, chardonnay braised chicken leg, pearl onions, cremini mushrooms, Yukon gold mash, winter greens
  • Mixed Bean Cassoulet, roasted butternut squash, king oyster mushrooms, winter greens (vegan)

Dessert Course (choice of one)

  • Sticky date and rum pudding, with vanilla bean crème anglaise and toffee sauce
  • Classic pavlova meringue, chantilly, tropical fruit

NOTE: Because the meal is being prepared and then delivered, we have limited capability to substitute course selections. We will attempt to accommodate dietary restrictions as indicated in the order.
