I love all things India and want you to, too. The colors, the fragrances, the sheer beauty of the Indian people have always drawn me to a magical place. The Voluptuous Table celebrates India with Bollywood in My Backyard, an evening of Indian food, music, film and dance beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 26th. Won't you join us for this celebration and and evening of exotic food, music and events?
Indian cinema is the world's largest film industry in film production, and it boasts Bollywood (imagine if Bombay and Hollywood had a love child) as its largest film producer. The most popular commercial genre in Bollywood since the 1970s has been the masala film, which freely mixes different genres including action, comedy, romance, drama and melodrama along with musical numbers, and Indian cinema has been the largest producer of the musical film genre since the 1960s when it exceeded the American film industry's total musical output.
As a happy coincidence, the four to five day festival known as Diwali is celebrated at this time every year. Diwali symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. In Hindu culture, light is a metaphor for knowledge and consciousness, and during Diwali, temples, homes, shops and office buildings are brightly illuminated. So we are holding our own luminous festival on the eve of Diwali with an Indian buffet of Truly Special Everyday Dal, Spicy Knockout Corn Vade, Vegetable Samosas with Two Chutneys, Indian Spiced Roasted Chickpeas, Tandoori Chicken Lollipops, and Seekh Kebabs with Grilled Onions and Yogurt Raita. For dessert, enjoy warm Gulab Jaman in Rosewater and Honey Syrup and creamy, fun-to-eat Mango
Kulfi with Cardamom and Pistachios. Would you like a cup of chai? Just ask--Vindaloo's chai is delightful. To heighten the culinary festivity, enjoy sparkling wine and Vindaloo's infamous Bollywood Bindhi punch, made with house-infused saffron vodka, ginger syrup, house-made allspice dram, lime juice, orgeat and a "bhindi" of Indonesian cinnamon.
And there's more: join us for Bollywood line dancing, a constant stream of Indian music featuring songs from popular India cinema, and a screening of Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India, one of the most famous Bollywood films produced. Enjoy this film on our Elgin Cinemascope screen, which is pretty much larger than life (or larger at least larger than our backyard).
Dress as you like, or come as your favorite Bollywood film star, but come--and bring your friends. This festivity is meant to be a total experience for the senses. We look forward to hosting you and your friends.
