Malbec - The "Lowly" Wine Grape                                                                                                                      by Bonnie Noll

Malbec: one of the six red grapes permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux wine and, yet, it languished as an unsung hero until it found new prominence and acclaim in the warmer terroir of Argentina. But, although Malbec is most widely viewed as an Argentinian wine grape, its scope has expanded to other regions of the world where Malbec has realized a wide range of expression.

During our upcoming event on Malbec – The “Lowly” Wine Grape, we will have the opportunity to learn about and taste Malbec in a variety of presentations representing France as well as North and South America. The wines that we will enjoy are as follows:

Gordon Estate Rosé, Columbia Valley – 2017
The nose of this enigmatic wine comes across with strawberry jam and lovely honeysuckle aromas; but this wine is much more crisp on the palate with flavors of bright berries, spice, and blood orange that linger with lively acidity on the palate.

Clos La Coutale Cahors, Southwest France – 2017
This Kermit Lynch import is a palate-staining, inky purple elixir with heady scents of smoky black fruits. An 80/20 Cahors Malbec/ Merlot blend that possesses incredibly smooth, caressing structure.

Pascual Tosa, Mendoza – 2017
An estate-grown Malbec that reveals a fruity nose filled with plum and quince aromas and a touch of elegant oak. The mouthfeel is full, with flavors of blackberry and licorice, and has a rich and lingering finish with smoky accents of vanilla and lingering oak.

Montes Malbec, Colchagua Valley, Chile – 2017
A full-bodied, round, soft, and generous red wine with strong spicy character. Ruby red color, leaning to very dark, intense red with plummy and blackberry hints. A wonderful butterscotch and slight spiciness are totally integrated by the subtle notes of vanilla that comes from the oak aging.

Francis Coppola Malbec, Sonoma - 2016
This 75/25 Malbec/Petite Syrah blend was grown in several coastal vineyards. A nose of cocoa, pepper, plum, and a hint of anise. A pleasantly warm finish that lasts a minute with a wisp of red cherries.

Don David Reserva, Cafayate Valley – 2017
Pipe tobacco, vanilla, and toasted notes. On the palate, it is well-balanced and vivacious red in color with violet sparkles as well as plum and chocolate notes and a pleasant finish.

Vinalba Reserva, Valley de Uco, Mendoza – 2016
Rich and inviting, this Malbec has smooth black current and plum flavors combined with toasty vanilla oak.

Susana Balboas Late Harvest, Mendoza – 2016
A dark ruby colored dessert wine offering a complex bouquet of cloves, cinnamon, tobacco, and black cherries. On the palate, layers of ripe red fruits are combined with notes of dark chocolate and slight anise leading to an amazingly long finish. It is a delicious wine when paired with chocolate cakes, brownies or red fruit-based cake.
