Napa's 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon vintage is one of the greats. Antonio Galloni calls 2016's Napa Cabernets "extraordinary." Wine Advocate rates the harvest 98 points - tied with 2013 for the highest score ever. Wine Spectator gives it 97 points (with 2013, the highest since 2007).
In short, the critics think the wines are fantastic. Let’s see what we think, shall we? Join us for this Spotlight on Napa Cabs class, as we sample seven 2016 vintage Napa Cabernets from top producers, famous sites, and with very impressive ratings. We’ll taste:
Zeitgeist Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2016 (Napa - WA 93)
Ch Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2016 (Calistoga - JD 92)
Eisele Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Altagracia 2016 (Calistoga – WA 95)
Frog's Leap Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2016 (Rutherford – Vinous 93)
Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley (Oakville – Vinous 92)
Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Signature 2016 (Prichard Hill – WA 96+)
Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five Stags Leap 2016 (Stags Leap – WA 95)
(We’d have loved to include something from Howell Mountain, but none of the top wines have released yet!).
During the class, we’ll learn about what makes some of Napa’s most famous AVA’s distinctive and taste how small differences in place and winegrowing approach can create big differences in the glass. We’ll also enjoy some light snacks to go with (and buffer!) these big, young, wines and explore the impact decanting has on them by trying two versions of the Zeitgeist – one “pop and pour” and the other decanted 2 hours before the class.
Will we agree that 2016 is one of the all-time great Napa vintages? You’ll have to join us to see! Reserve your seats to this exciting Sunday tasting online here, by calling us at 703.356.6500, or simply by stopping by the store.
