I remember arriving in southern Italy from Greece in my student days and dining at many simple establishments where the mother worked the cash register, the beautiful daughters served and Papa worked the wood-fired oven, not because it was hip as in the US but because that’s the way they’d done things for countless generations. The wine came from a big vat or barrel at the back of the dining floor, served in an unmarked bottle that was filled even before I took my seat and placed before me with an empty juice glass before water was even thought of. At the end of the meal the server held up the bottle, charged me for what I had consumed and poured the rest back into the vat. Civilization doesn’t get any better than that.
Unfortunately I ran out of money in Rome (that’s another much longer story) and so never got a chance to explore the north. (I hope for a return some day of course.)
Meanwhile we’ll taste reds from north, south and central Italy.
Price is $20. Please call or see the front desk to place reservations. 802 253-5742. Doors open @ 4:00. I suggest you arrive no later than 5:00 to avoid feeling rushed. People come and go during the tasting which is an informal walk around format. We end at 6:00
