Garland with Skipstone Wines and RARECAT Wines

Sponsored by Andy Penry & Karen Moriarty

Skipstone Wines

Skipstone is tucked between two stunning hillsides in the mountains above Alexander Valley. We aspire to perfection in every aspect of our wine growing and estate farming, drawing inspiration from the unparalleled potential and promise of the earth.

Uncompromising in our standards of sustainability and treatment of the land, we are committed to nurturing the precious resource that is our 200 acre estate. Blessed by nature, we listen intently to the terroir of our vineyards, and in turn, our wines speak eloquently of their origin.

To Constance and Fahri Diner, Skipstone is more than a winegrowing estate — it is a devoted partnership with the earth.  A native of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, Fahri speculates that an affinity for the land may be in his blood. Blessed with tranquil olive groves and idyllic Mediterranean sunshine reminiscent of his birthplace, Skipstone inspires in Fahri an instinctive connection to the property. Fahri’s years as an entrepreneur and venture capitalist have given him a striking ability to envision the potential of a property like Skipstone. He believes passionately in Skipstone’s mission to produce wines that rival the quality and artistry of California’s most highly regarded wine estates.

RARECAT Wines is built on the philosophy of a Joie de Vivre life.  A joy of everything that connects people at the table over a glass of wine.  Connecting to important things in life, and experiencing joy with the people you love, cherish, and want to meet!  We create special experiences and opportunities through RARECAT programs such as RARECAT Professional,  RARECAT trunk shows and the RARECAT Ambassadors program.  Creating lifelong connections and artful living through wine, wine education, and charitable giving.  That is the RARECAT promise.

It was during a junior year abroad in France where Sharon Kazan Harris spent a year at the Université de Bordeaux. As a student she was taken under the wing of the wife of the University’s president, which is how she found herself, at age 20, being taken on a personal tour of Chateau Haut Brion, producer of one of the greatest wines in the world. The tour was led by the legendary Monsieur Delmas (Senior) himself, who kindly let her taste the renowned 1982 vintage out of the barrel, followed by the 1966. That moment changed her life, and sealed her interest in wine and the Bordeaux region itself.  Sharon applied and was accepted to the famous DUAD program (the Diplome Universitaire d’Aptitude a la Degustation des Vins) offered through the Universitié de Bordeaux’s Oenology department and graduated with honors.

Although Sharon was raised in California and lives in the Napa Valley, her love of wine is a shared experience of two viticulture worlds; Napa and Bordeaux.  This connection is the personality of RARECAT Wines.  Combining American sensibility and love of the land with a Bordeaux palate and winemaking education rooted in old world traditions.  The blending of these two worlds has define a RARECAT wine style based on elegance and balance.

Garland offers spice driven seasonal cuisine with a focus on Indian and Asian flavors and the evolution of those culinary traditions. Using ingredients from local farmers keeps them connected to their home in Downtown Raleigh and allows for an evolving, made-from-scratch menu. Seasonal handcrafted cocktails, quality spirits, wine and beer curated to pair with our food are featured. The dining room is stylish, unpretentious and cozy with many unique details built by local artisans.

Chef and owner Cheetie Kumar, who grew up in India before moving to New York and then North Carolina, developed a following with her unique eatery. Kumar continues to gather accolades including 2017 James Beard Foundation Semifinalist, and Open Table’s 5 Southern Chefs to Watch and 100 Best Restaurants For Foodies In America.

“Using flavors and techniques gleaned from around the world, Garland's menu adds a twist to some familiar and local ingredients,” according to a press release. “Guests will find cuisine that is representative of India, southeast Asia, Korea and beyond.”
