Destination Barcelona: Costador Terroirs Mediterranis and Indigenous Grapes of Catalonia

Costador works with an incredible variety of indigenous grapes to Catalonia: Grenache, Carignan, Sumoll Negre, Trepat, Macabeu, Xarel.lo, Sumoll blanc, and some foreign varietals like Chenin Blanc and Pinot Noir.
Joan Franquet is the singular man behind these wines made in the environs of Barcelona. He works organically in his mountain vineyards. The vineyards are very old, the major part between 60 to 110 years, with a variety of soils (slate, clay and limestone). Vineyards are located between 1200 and 2400 feet which leads to a longer growing season, allowing the grapes preserve freshness & acidity.
All grapes are hand harvested. Everything is fermented with wild, indigenous yeasts. The major part of the fermentation is done an amphora, but some wines use steel tanks or neutral oak. Aging is mostly done in amphorae and oak that has been used several times.
