Meet the women in Cava:
Judit Llop, winemaker, Vins Família Ferrer
Judit Llop Gasull is winemaker at Vins Família Ferrer, a position she’s held since 2018. In her role, she leads the team in crafting sparkling wines under the designation of Cava de Guarda Superior de Paraje Calificado (superior Cavas that comes from a specially selected place) in the Penedès. From Tarragona, Spain, she has a degree in Oenology from the Rovira i Virgili University of Tarragona and an Executive MBA from ESIC Barcelona. Judit’s roots are closely tied to viticulture and she believes that while the identity of each wine is determined by the quality of the grapes, the key lies in affording philosophy, attention, and persistence each day in every little detail.
Maite Esteve, general manager, Vins el Cep
Maite Esteve is general manager of Vins el Cep in Sadurní d’Anoia, a winery established in 1980 as a union between four families of wine growers—Carreras, Esteve, Masana and Parera—to share their extensive experience in agriculture and in winemaking. Maite leads all operations, following her father Josep Esteve, one of the founders of Vins El Cep, who played a pivotal role in maintaining true to the grape growing legacy, while boosting growth.
Marta Casas, winemaker and sommelier, Parés Baltà
Marta Casa has been involved in the family business at Parés Baltà since 2001. She shares her winemaking role with her sister-in-law, Maria Elena. Marta studied to be a pharmacist at Barcelona University before learning about wine through tastings and travels around the world to various wine regions of the world, which eventually pushed her to study enology. She received a Master’s degree in Biodynamic Agriculture in 2013 and she helped convert Parés Baltà achieve its Demeter certification for Biodynamic practices that same year. In 2017, she graduated as Sommelier for the Barcelona University. Apart from her winemaking duties, she teaches biodynamic rules and philosophy in different courses and viticulture schools all over Spain and also in Barcelona University.
