Clos de los Siete, Red Blend, Valle Uco, Mendoza, Argentina, 2018 ($22)

Tasting Notes:

Clos de los Siete 2018 has a beautiful deep red color with glints of ruby. The nose is characterized by intense, complex aromatic expression with scents of dark fruit, blackberries and blueberries, and floral notes accompanied by delicate hints of spice. The palate is generous, silky and full-bodied. The blend presents a remarkable balance between well-rounded tannins, intense fruit, and good concentration. This wine has a characteristic freshness and beautiful length on the palate. Seductive, elegant and complex, it has great potential to improve with age.

Ilaria, Malbec, Napa Valley, California, 2018/2019 (Cab fans will love) ($45)

Tasting Notes:

Seeing as Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley’s vineyard acreage, it’s refreshing to see another grape getting a tiny share of representation. Even better: This Malbec from Anna Monticelli is a great wine at a great price point. The 2019 vintage shows darker fruits and a more dominant toasty oak influence compared to 2018’s overt fruitiness. Dark and inky in color with blueberry, plum, vanilla and caramel notes, the wine has a lasting aftertaste and ripe tannins.

Chakana, Estate Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina, 2019 ($30)

Tasting Notes:

The color is deep purple, very intense, typical of Malbec. Plum, brambly berries, spices and an iris/violet note are apparent on the nose. Intense, fruity flavors with velvety tannins. Excellent with roasted meats, duck, salad, pasta, pizza.

Kaiken Wines "Aventura" Malbec, Los Chacayes Norte Mendoza, Argentina, 2019 ($40)

Tasting Notes:

The grapes are grown on young vines of virgin areas, 130 kilometres southwest of Mendoza, 1,250 metres above sea level. In order to show the joint values of the grapes and the landscape without any refraction, the most neutral processing method is carried out: the wines are fermented and aged in concrete tanks. The screw cap and the fairytale label with the funny wild goose do not prepare the consumer for what they’ll get – intense, precise, pure and natural wines that are rich in different notes, full of life and tempting details.

Catena Zapata, Nicolás Catena Zapata, Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina, 2018 ($100)

Tasting Notes:

With its inaugural 1997 vintage, Nicolás Catena Zapata became the first luxury cuvée from Argentina to be exported around the world. The wine recreates the “Original Bordeaux Blend” of the 18th and 19th Centuries, when Malbec dominated over Merlot and was in equal standing to Cabernet Sauvignon in the Médoc. Prephylloxeric Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon massale selections of ungrafted vines give rise to this wine, opening a window to the past from the mountain vineyards of Mendoza, Argentina.
