Wines of the Balkans by Marty Cook
Our next Wine Wednesday on January 19th at 7:00 p.m. Eastern/New York Time revolves around the wines of the Balkans. As wine regions go, the Balkans comprises one that is lesser known by most, yet possesses more ancient roots in practicing the craft of winemaking than today’s more well-known wine regions.
There are eleven countries that comprise the Balkans, namely Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, and Slovenia. These countries have a rich history and winemaking tradition and may present a challenge in finding a representative example of their wines, due to availability of wines from the Balkans in our domestic fine wine shops. Still, there are many possibilities from which to choose, if you do some sleuthing! I personally know that there are a number of both red and white Grecian wines available, as well as many wines from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Romania on the shelves of local wine shops. Ask your Wine Specialist for assistance and you will be surprised at the number of Balkan wines you will find!
