★Domaine Jamet, Côte-Rôtie, Rhône, France, 2018 ($200) - 97 Points

Winemaker's Tasting Notes

The assemblage, a key word for Jean-Paul, makes it possible to access the Côte Rôtie of the Domaine Jamet. The variety of terroirs, exposure and the age of the vines are complementary elements that combine their strengths. Produced from twenty parcels and essentially in whole bunches, the wine is subsequently kept in barrels for twenty-two months.

★Domaine Leflaive, Puligny-Montrachet AOC, Burgundy, France, 2020 ($325)

Winemaker's Tasting Notes

Like the harvest, the wine is generous with ample weight, coating every inch of the palate. This is the perfect wine in the lineup to enjoy immediately while the more specific cru sites can age and mature in the cellar.

★Château Cheval Blanc, Le Petit Cheval Blanc, Bordeaux 2018 ($225) - 98 Points

Winemaker's Tasting Notes

Ruby red color, characteristic of its youth. The nose starts out intense, with balsamic notes and aromas of cocoa, caramel, and vanilla, combined with fruity nuances reminiscent of cherry and strawberry. Swirling in the glass enhances these fruity hints. The wine’s freshness is brought out with licorice overtones along side wonderfully expressive notes of Virginia tobacco. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied and silky, with round, delicate and smooth tannin mid-palate.The long finish is redolent of very ripe red fruit. A very rich wine that is guaranteed to please!

★ Château Grillet, Château-Grillet Viognier, Rhône, France, 2017 ($525) - 97 Points

Winemaker's Tasting Notes

Château-Grillet is a wine for the initiated, which does not give up its secrets easily; it has great elegance, tightness and a magnificent aromatic complexity. It is a wine for cellaring, and requires patience until it reveals all its magic. Its minerality is often accompanied by a freshness reminiscent of a sea breeze, sometimes even with hints of mint. The aromatic spectrum is wide and varied. Floral elegance (rose, violet, lime-blossom) and soft fruitiness (pear, pineapple, apricot) can also accompany warmer, more indulgent notes such as honey, nougat, hazelnut, vanilla, white truffle, or spices like saffron.

★ Château Cheval Blanc, Grand Cru Classé, St. Emilion, Bordeaux, France, 2012 ($700) - 96 Points

Winemaker's Tasting Notes

This vintage is already complex, and features an impressive range of aromas and flavors from the very first. The color is a deep crimson with mauve highlights. The nose exhibits great aromatic purity and astonishing complexity: red fruit (raspberry, cherry), black fruit (blackcurrant jam, blueberry), and delicate floral nuances (rose and violet). Freshness (mint and eucalyptus) and minerality (graphite, chalk) round out the vivacious aromatic profile. The bouquet is quite unique: tremendously pure, and the oak is not even noticeable – the sign of a great vintage. 2012 Cheval Blanc starts out straightforward and powerful on the palate. The middle palate is concentrated, with firm tannin that is nevertheless incomparably rich.
