WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is perfect for wine enthusiasts or for individuals new to wine study. This qualification provides a hands-on introduction to the world of wine. You’ll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell, and taste, while also gaining the basic skills to describe wines accurately. The following summarizes the program date and agenda;

September 24 - 12:00pm - 6:00pm – Through interactive activities, students learn about the parts of a grape, the basics of alcoholic fermentation, wine growing environments, wine production and wine styles. Students learn to calibrate their palates to determine sweetness, acidity and tannin levels in wine as well as determine how food affects wine through a food and wine pairing lab exercise. This program includes an introductory deductive tasting lesson of 8 wines from the principal grape varieties. During the tasting lesson, students will learn about the characteristics of each grape variety and the differences between flavors and acidity levels in various regions of the world. The deductive tasting is followed up by a lesson on examples of wines around the world from the principal grape varieties. At the end the program, a 30 question multiple choice examination is administered. Students who receive a passing score on the exam receive a certificate and lapel pin. Missed or failed examinations can be resit for a fee of $50.

Established in 1969 for the UK wine trade, the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) has since grown to become the global industry leader in wine and spirits education.
