Rioja wine's history spans millennia, from Roman introductions (2nd Century BCE) and Phoenician roots (11th Century BCE) to medieval pilgrim trade, blossoming commercially in the 1800s with French influence, railway access, and the phylloxera epidemic which boosted French investment, leading to quality regulations, modern aging techniques in oak barrels, and its current status as Spain's premier wine region with official designations (DOCa) from the 1920s onward.
