Founded in 2005 by husband-and-wife team Brian Mast and Jennifer Waits, Waits-Mast Family Cellars is a micro-production winery based in San Francisco. In 2000, after a multitude of weekend getaways spent exploring wineries across California (and a few special trips to delve into wines from France, Switzerland and New Zealand), the duo dipped their toes into the winemaking scene by sitting in on the Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival’s technical conference. The immersion that weekend, along with the warm and welcoming wine community of Anderson Valley, prompted the couple to take their love of the varietal to a new level—making the plunge from wine consumers to wine producers. Their love for wine is rooted in Mendocino County, and through a selection of single-vineyard Pinot Noirs, they aim to showcase the diversity of flavors and characteristics found in the region.
Waits-Mast has always produced their wines in San Francisco. Winemaking operations are currently at the Mansfield-Dunne winery in the Bayview district of the city, and carried out under the guidance of winemaker Shalini Sekhar, who came onboard in 2013 when she was the Custom Crush Winemaker at ROAR Wines. A former musician—she earned a master’s degree in Flute and Piccolo Performance—Shalini shifted to a career in wine, studying Enology and Viticulture at Fresno State University and honing her skills at Williams-Selyem, Copain Custom Crush (now Punchdown Cellars), and Bluxome Street winery. While at ROAR, she made wine for Waits-Mast, Furthermore Pinot Noir, Neely Wine (and several other smaller brands), and in was included in the San Francisco Chronicle’s 2019 Winemakers to Watch.
Waits-Mast is a shining jewel in the crown of “urban winemaking” and we are thrilled to host our friend (and neighbor), Brian Mast, as he joins us to share a lineup of his current releases.
