Chianti, Brunello, even Vino Nobile di Montepulciano - all 100% or mainly Sangiovese. The "blood of Jove" grape clearly sucks up the limelight in Tuscany and across Italy (it is the pennensula's most planted grape, after all). But the golden Tuscan sun ripens other grapes to power and perfection, too. And in this class, we'll poke around a bit to get to know the glories of Tuscan wine beyond Sangiovese.
You've heard of "super-Tuscans"? The first - and still arguably finest - was a Cabernet blend from the hills above marsh along Tuscany's western coast. Syrah certainly shines in France's Northern Rhone and Australia's Barossa Valley; in Tuscany, you'll find a bit of the best of both. Merlot can be fine enough to make you forget Sideways (if you even remember that!), while "blending" grapes like Canaiolo, Colorino and Ciliegiolo can shine solo when they get the chance.
In this tour of Tuscany's less well-traveled vinous roads, we'll explore some of the territory's less well-known black grapes and dip into the two terrific whites of Tuscany (Vernaccia and Vermentino) as well. You'll meet some supple sippers and have the chance to get to know a more "grand" bottling or two. And, when the session's done, you'll have a new appreciation of Tuscany beyond Sangiovese.
The class takes place in the downstairs classroom of Chain Bridge Cellars at 1351 Chain Bridge Road, McLean, VA 22101. We'll cover seven wines and serve wine-friendly light snacks during the class from 7pm until around 8:30pm. Reservations may be cancelled for full refund up to 48 hours before the event by calling the shop at 703.356.6500.
