Southern Belle Spanish Wine Tasting (aged in Pappy van Winkle Bourbon Barrels)

featuring Dan Philips, Proprietor

Sigel’s-Fitzhugh (3209 N Fitzhugh) Thursday, March 30th       5-7pm

“The idea to use the bourbon barrels came over dinner I shared with my buddy Julian Van Winkle at a Southern Foodways Alliance meeting at Blackberry Farm. It was literally as simple as an idea that came up in conversation. Hey, let's do something together. Hey, what about putting wine in used Pappy barrels? Okay, I'll send you some. I don't know if you've ever seen old, used bourbon barrels, but they're ugly. When the winemakers first saw the barrels, they flat out refused to put wine anywhere near them. But, eventually they did an the result is in the bottle. I've also had lifetime motivation that has driven my career to create new wines and to take wine places it has never gone before.” Dan Philips

Join us at Sigel’s-Fitzhugh on Thursday, March 30th from 5-7pm as Dan Philips, Proprietor of Southern Belle and The Grateful Palate will be on hand to lead us through a tasting of their current releases. To RSVP for this free tasting please contact Jim Fleming at store94wine@twinliquors.com or 214/639-3162

Wines to be Tasted:

reg $ Special $

Southern Belle Diddley Bow Dry Malvasia             $10.99            $8.79

100% Malvasia. Bright, crisp, and reminiscent of a Sauvignon Blanc. Notes of stone fruit, pear, citrus, and a touch of vanilla.

French Belle Bordeaux 18                                     $15.99            $12.79

Just like the other Southern Belle wines, this one is aged in older Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrels! The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The Merlot contributes notes of cassis, ripe plum, and supple texture while the Cab Franc adds notes of tobacco, darker fruit, and spice. And the 8 months of aging in those Pappy barrels adds attractive notes of molasses, brown spice, and carmelized sugar. When you put it all together, you get a wine that drinks more like a Pomerol or Saint Emilion.

Southern Belle Poor Thing Grenache 18           $16.99            $13.59

100% Grenache. A wine that captures the essence of Grenache, deep, powerful and expressive with superb balance. Displays loads of red and black fruit, with a creamy texture and an exotic spicy character. Soft, big, yet elegant mouth feel. Full bodied with superb balance and grip, and a long finish, carrying intense ripe fruit and complex flavors.

Southern Belle Red Blend                                    $19.99            $15.99

The original Bourbon barrel aged red wine, Southern Belle is the creation of importer Dan Phillips of the Grateful Palate. This blend of Syrah and Monastrell from Jumilla in Southern Spain, it sees 6-8 months of aging in old Pappy van Winkle barrels. Medium deep opaque purple color with dark red rim. Initial aromas redolent of blackberry and blueberry with underlying hints of red fruits give way to pleasing complex elements of vanilla and toffee. Soft, big, yet elegant mouth feel, rich, full body, density, superb balance and grip, lead to long, long finish, carrying intense ripe fruit and complex flavors. Soft, supple, dramatic, sexy wine with a compelling yummy factor that screams 'drink me'.

Southern Belle Precious                                       $39.99            $31.99

100% Syrah. Spending 18-24 glorious months aging in used bourbon barrels from legendary Pappy Van Winkle, old vine fruit shines through with aromas and flavors of blueberry liqueur, blackberry, black cherry and peppery spice. Then there is a graceful segue into wood smoke, brown sugar, vanilla, and sweet spice that frame all of that ripe and savory fruit very nicely. Super full bodied and full flavored, but smooth and silky on the palate, this is probably about as close as most of us will get to Pappy van Winkle.
